At Different Ends (single 2020)

about

Written about a year after the Presidential election of 2016, this song reflects on the division and loss of wonder in American society from the perspective of one lonely observer.

After the election of 2016, I felt a weight of gravity that I've never felt before. The sobering thought reminded me of how much we (speaking as a citizen of the United States) have let the reigns of our democracy slip away from us. Agree or disagree, we have let the power brokers win - the election of 2016 simply a logical step of the infusion of money in our body politic. The wonder and innocence of daily life feels as though it has fled, as we search for answers instead of distractions.

I feel the division among us, but the juxtaposition of what unites us is that we are all just trying to make our way to what we believe is right, often times in our own bubbles, not considering another point of view. I'm just as guilty of that as anyone.

And so we are... living among the divided, sometimes yelling at each other, sometimes ignoring each other.

This song is not an answer. Just a snapshot.

How do I wonder now
When the rain keeps falling down
And sunny days are distant
And all the clouds insistent
that it’s time to make their sound

How do I wonder now
When the innocence is gone
Sadness fills the spaces
People wear long faces
from the tragedy at dawn

And everyone’s at different ends
They’re just trying to make their way
to what they believe is right
with nothing left at times to say

How do I wonder now
When the hands have shifted tone
When hope’s a fragile memory
Happiness a reverie
and I’m heavy like a stone

How do I wonder now
When the power brokers won
Leaving me sedated
Heartbroken and jaded
with threads that come undone

And everyone’s at different ends
They’re just trying to make their way
to what they believe is right
with nothing left at times to say

And everyone’s at different ends
They’re just trying to make their way
to what they believe is right
with nothing left at times to say
